a5c7b9f00b It is the 23rd Century and vacationing Captain Kirk faces two challenges: climbing Yosemite's El Capitan and teaching campfire songs to Spock. But vacations are cut short when a renegade Vulcan with a startling secret hijacks the Enterprise in order to find a mythical planet. Kirk and his crew set out to stop this madman in an adventure that takes them to the center of the universe and, perhaps, before the face of God. With the crew under Vulcan control, the captain must rely on an unlikely alliance to save the galaxy. Meanwhile, a Klingon captain wants to make a name for himself and sets out to pursue the Enterprise and intercept Kirk.
Captain Kirk and his crew must deal with Mr. Spock's long-lost half-brother who hijacks the Enterprise for an obsessive search for God at the center of the galaxy.
This is the first and only movie that I have ever walked out of the theatre on, and I am a HUGE Star Trek fan. The Trek movies (and TV episodes) vary in quality like in any series, which is to be expected, but this piece of you-know-what is in a stinky league all by itself. Watching its amateurish direction and atrocious editing is a nightmare for anyone who appreciates well-made films. Along with absolutely pitiful and unfunny humor comes completely awful effects that are not at all special and painfully unthreatening "villains."

SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD (Not That It Matters)…

William Shatner, the true villain for brewing this up in the first place, for some reason treats this Trek entrya Jerry Lewis-style comedy, and Jim Kirk like a complete moron. Now, I realize that Trek has a special brand of humor that Star Trek IV was able to convey, and Paramount was probably hoping for more of it. But having Kirk act like Jack Tripper from Three's Company, Spock mispronouncing "marshmallows" and Scotty banging his head on a low ceiling and doing a slapstick-style flop onto his ass isn't just unfunny, it's not Star Trek. And the Klingon having to apologize at the end, oooh, I almost peed myself. Ha ha. (Yes, on one a dark day, I did watch the entire accursed thing on video. My ex-girlfriend made me do it.) Kirk wearing a "Go climb a rock" T-shirt? I don't think so.

And Sybok??? I've seen more threatening characters hanging out in a mall food court. And regarding Uhura… Ugh. We're supposed to believe that if old Uhura did an exotic dance it would bring forth a stampeding horde of horny dudes? Maybe Bones should've taken his shirt off, that would've really gotten results.

Yes, I hate this movie. I think you will too, WHETHER you are a "Trekker" or not. Even Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek's creator, reportedly detested it but unfortunately he had only limited control over his "baby." I will force myself to say one positive thing, however. The only even remotely palatable scene in this mistake is the always good DeForrest Kelley (R.I.P.)'s short scene re-living a tragedy. To think that the excellent novel "Probe," which told the story of the mysterious Earth-threatening Probe from Star Trek IV, was nearly adapted instead. What was Shatner on? … Now let's never speak of it again.
This movie is heavily under rated and did not deserve one of the Razzie awards it recieved. I'm sure Bill Shatner did his best considering he didn't have much to work with. There was set damage, budget cuts and costume difficulties and possibly other things that gave this film a bad time. This movie may not be the best of the Star Trek series, but it's not bad. It beats Star Trek III "The Search For Spock" because the story doesn't drag. I will say the visual effects could have been better, they are a bit dissappointing. I'm surprised that Paramount didn't give Shatner a chance to update the visual effects like they did in "The Motion Picture". Those people that have only seen this film once and say it's horrible, I say give it another chance.
"Star Trek V" is pretty much of a mess - a movie that betrays all the signs of having gone into production at a point where the script doctoring should have begun in earnest. There is no clear line from the beginning of the movie to the end, not much danger, no characters to really care about, little suspense, uninteresting or incomprehensible villains, and a great deal of small talk and pointless dead ends. Of all of the "Star Trek" movies, this is the worst.
While most of the Enterprise's crew are on shore leave, chief engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan) and communications officer Lt Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) stay behind to effect repairs on the new Enterprise NCC-1701A. When they learn of a terrorist uprising on Nimbus III, the planet of Galactic Peace, they are ordered by Starfleet to reassemble their crew and investigate. A renegade Vulcan named Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) has taken three ambassadors—Klingon General Korrd (Charles Cooper), Romulan Caithlin Dar ()—all for the purpose of commandeering the Enterprise in order to search the center of the galaxy for the planet Sha Ka Ree, which he is certain is the home of the Creator. Unfortunately, hot on their tail is a Klingon Bird of Prey, piloted by Klingon commander Klaa (Todd Bryant) who is trying to make a name for himself by capturing Admiral James T Kirk (William Shatner). A year after the previous film, 2287 A.D. Realizing that the entity on Sha Ka Ree is not God but a planet-bound entity that was either created by or attracted to Sybok's arrogance, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy attempt to escape in the shuttle, but the angry entity begins to wreak havoc on the planet's surface. Kirk requests that the Enterprise, still suffering transporter problems, beam up Spock and McCoy first. JustKirk is about the be beamed aboard, the Klingon warbird attacks, demanding that Kirk be handed over to them. Spock appeals to Klingon Ambassador Korrd for help. Korrd orders the Klingon ship to destroy the entity and beam Kirk aboard. Korrd orders Klaa to apologize for his unauthorized attack on the Enterprise, and it is pointed out that their "new gunner" Spock is the one who fired on the entity. Kirk says that he thought he was going to die, but Spock assures him that he was never alone. Later, both the Starfleet and the Klingon crews are shown celebrating together on the Enterprise, suggesting the beginning of a Klingon/Starfleet collaboration. During the celebration, McCoy speculatesto whether God is really out there, but Kirk suggest that God is really in our hearts. Spock points out that he has lost a brother, and Kirk reminds him that he (Kirk) also lost a brother once but that he was lucky to get him back. In the final scene, Kirk, Spock and McCoy are again out camping. The three of them are finally able to sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" together. Yes.
